Even though there is an alien in almost every hex around your explorer they just leave him alone. The first time I tried it I expected to lose my explorer but I needed that nest gone so I did it anyway. It blew me away when he was able to just walk away after the fact. After you take out the nest, it's fairly common for the aliens to not care about you- I've sniped some alien nests with other units, and most of the time after the nest is gone, the aliens just wander away and ignore me. They'll attack units that are a danger to a nest (within 2 hexes), but once the nest isn't there, they don't hold any grudges. As far as getting rid of nests is concerned, once you have that point in purity you can use your explorers to eliminate nests.

Either way, you don't need Biowells to get and stay over 20 health. I still don't understand where you're getting so much health from. I have a game with the +7 bonus and it's still hard staying positive. It isn't until the late game that I can seem to get up that high. I find it very easy to stay over 20 health also if I beeline straight for 'Joy from Variety' and 'Eudaimonia.' You can reach Joy in six virtue choices and you can reach Eudaimonia in seven choices (if you skip Joy) or 8 choices. Then I backfill everything else I want or need in other trees.

Also, apologies for my earlier typo. There's a Virtue bonus (Prosperity, I believe) that's a straight +7 to civ health, not 7%.

As far as getting rid of nests is concerned, once you have that point in purity you can use your explorers to eliminate nests. There is no retribution whatsoever. He just waits next to the nest until the alien guarding it moves and once it's clear, the explorer just walks over and eliminates the nest. Pick up your 25 energy for the nest and a point in purity if it's your first. Even though there is an alien in almost every hex around your explorer they just leave him alone.
