I’m using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Firefox 13 with the latest JAVA update from Apple (1.6.0_33-b03-424) installed yesterday. According to the JAVA control panel, applet plugins are activated. With Safari, I can use JAVA applets. Hi, My Firefox plug-in check is telling me that there is an update for Java, but when I visit the link it's still taking me to the old update (the Java 7 update 9). Also, according to the Java test page, Java 7u9 is still showing that it's the latest.it says I have the recommended version. Only Java and Flash are listed in the file, really, so not too big an issue since Java 6 update 37 should be the only Java installed. Hopefully Oracle and Apple get this resolved quickly for 10.8, but I suspect that 10.6 and Java may never be friends again without killing the xprotect.meta.plist. (For the record) Apple's Java Update 10 for Mac OS X 10.5 caused Java to no longer be detected in Firefox 4.0 and above and in other non-Apple browsers that use Java Plugin2 (this did not affect Safari or Firefox 3.6). Mozilla fixed the problem in the latest Firefox 5.0.1 update.
We had the same Problem in our Enterprise. Worldwide Macs weren't able to start any java applications from 10.6.8 to 10.8.x I found, that in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.p list there is a 'JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum' thats responsible for that behavior. After running a sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Delete:JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum' /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta. Plist in terminal all java apps are working again. Regards, Shirkan. Worked for me when many, many other attempts did not.
To resolve, open and reset the preference to 'true' (the default value), then restart Firefox or SeaMonkey. [] Enabling and disabling Java from the Java Control Panel Applies to Windows or Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above Starting in Java 7, the includes the Security option, 'Enable Java content in the browser', which is selected by default.
If you see a message such as 'Application Blocked by Security Settings' with no option to run Java, then Java has blocked the content for security reasons. Starting in Java 7 Update 51, (Web Start applications and applets) with certificates from an untrusted source (self-signed) and those with no certificate or missing application Name and Publisher information (unsigned), are blocked by default.

This isn't the safest bet for people who are not the safest of computer users, but should be OK short term.
